Singer-songwriter Joey McNally has released a new album. The guitar focus in the release is lightly mocked with the name “Surfing With The Algorithm”, a light jab at shredder Joe Satriani’s 1987 album (has it been that long?) with a tint of new world social media dread. The release is varied in its palette, silly at times and, as I mentioned before, quite heavy on the guitars. The instrumentals are interesting and engaging, though, crossing canonical guitar play with angular instrumentation, stylistic play and exaggerated vocal work. I had never come across Joey’s music, and a peek at “Algorithm” perked my ears and left me interested in the sound.
